You play Edward Carnby, who finds himself trying to link a series of mysteries surrounding New York's Central Park. We won't give away what mysteries, but they are truly ridiculous and bizarre, and surpsise, involve the occult. You have the old guy and an art dealer to give you clues. But the game mostly involves you wondering around the dark sewers and underground of New York while figuring out how to solve puzzles and kill stuff with whatever you find.
Almost all objects in the environment can be used to make weapons, or be set on fire to solve puzzles. The game features a first and third person view. Almost all the combat in the game is melee, and you'll be fighting the kind of monsters and ghosts famous in the series. The entire game runs in episodes, and you have the ability to skip ahead to different episodes. While this does break up some of the tension built from episode to episode, it reduces the monotony of trying to solve a specific puzzle to move to the next episode.
The graphics feature beautiful backgrounds in some areas and the best fire effects on the 360. But it is a very dark game and a great deal of time is spent in places that feature broken down buildings or concrete areas. The music is dark and moody, and when there's something interesting coming up, it rises to meet the tension. There are a few issues with the clipping and some major glithes that will have you restarting from a save point. There's also camera problems and some control issues.
We're not big fans of adventure games, but this one has an interesting plot. But the one complaint that we can't ignore is the number of glitches and generic enemies that dominate this game. We can't recommend a game just for plot, so unless you're a huge fan of the series and don't mind horrible bugs, you can find your horror elsewhere. It's an adventure game so there's no multiplayer and the episodic content means you won't be visiting the game after playing it since there's not much to unlock.
