Assassin's Creed is about some bartender guy from 2012 who ends up reliving the memories of his ancestor from 1191 thanks to some machine. We never knew memories were hereditary! But I guess it's 2012 and anything's possible. I mean if the Jetsons had flying cars, then why not some machine that draws memories from ancestors you never knew existed!
So what does your ancestor do back in 1191? Apparently the guy is a hitman who must kill guys trying to aggravate more violence during the Third Crusades. Once again, there's a bigger plot that involves world domination in the future that somehow you must uncover using secrets from the past. Sound weird and over the top? It's a videogame so what do you expect. You'll be jumping time periods from future to past to solve everything.
The game is in t hird person perspective. You play the assassin ancestor Althair. Your job is mainly to kill important people without getting notice. So it's mainly a stealth game. There's three large cities to investigate that is full of life unlike any game before including Grand Theft Auto or Oblivion. The cities are filled with people and everybody acts as a real person would. If you bump into them too hard, they'll push you. If you jump on a roof, everybody will stop and stare at you. Although you do not have direct influence on the people like in Oblivion.
The action is slow because it's a stealth game. You have Spider-Man like moves that you can use to climb walls and jump long distances. You can hide in shadows and whatever was chasing you will give up and forget about you. You can also just kill everybody, but the battles get monotonous with the limited moveset they give you in the game. The main point is not to get noticed, which is kinda boring for us. But some people love this type of gaming.
The graphics are incredible. The best textures on the 360 yet and the cities are huge. You can climb every inch of them, although not at first since they limit you to certain areas at the beginning. The sound is just as amazing. Climb high enough and you'll hear the wind. Stay with the crowd and you'll hear people chatting in the background. The music is a little ancient and annoying. But the total package has very high production values.
No online mode for this game, but it doesn't really need one since it's a first person stealth game. The plot will last you about 20 hours and another 20 for extra stuff and collectibles. You can kill anybody in anyway that you like which does give the game a nice variety and the cities are incredible to explore. Overall, it's one of the best games of 2007, which has seen many great games on the 360.
