So here we are ready for our big break in show business. It's time for us to rise and become a superstar like winning American Idol. And how do we do that? Through skimpy clothing and bad dancing? No. Apparently, by beating everybody above us to a pulp. We kid you not. That's the story!
And to add spice to the story, you got to deal with rival record execs, golddigging women, and dirty cops. Luckily, most of these things can be resolved through violence.
And that's where this game falls flat on it's macho face. The fighting here is circa 1970 Village People. We're talking about chops, punches, and kicks. No great combos. Instead they added a bizarre groove where your punches deal more damage if you can match the music while fighting by rotating the analog sticks like spinning records circa 1980. Although this is useless since whether you beat your opponent or not is based on luck more than skill. Hit the right button and your punch connects. Hit the wrong one and the AI will block and beat you senseless. And everything is kinda slow. This is no Soul Calibur.
Getting back to the rappers, they are huge and varied as their music. You can pick any of them and duke it out with your cuz, whatever that is. There's Method Man and Redman, and well, that's all we really know because those two had a sitcom on Fox and the rest don't. But if you like rap, there's plenty of rappers for you.
And there are a few locations like a gas station, front porche of someone's house, and the always popular club fight. And to top it all off, some of the locations have cool animations like explosions and more explosions! Yeah!
The graphics are kinda okay. I mean everybody kinda looks like they should, like a Smackdown Vs. Raw wrestling game. The music is rap. If you like rap, this game is an all you can eat buffet of rap.
Unfortunately, there's only online match play. This is kinda disappointing. And there isn't any special modes in the single player. For a fighting game, it's obviously lacking, especially considering this is not the first Def Jam game. EA really disappoints with this area.
Overall, we feel this just isn't a very good game. No. It's a pretty awful game. The fighting system is more guess and less skill which is ridiculous for a fighting game. The gameplay modes are severely lacking. What sets this apart is the list of rappers and rap songs, although anyone who has played a Def Jam game will tell you this is the worst Def Jam game in the series.
