Leave it up to the Japanese to create a simple third person shooter featuring giant insects and giant robots. They obviously got their inspiration from those old monster movies your father or grandfather probably saw fifty years ago when the Cold War didn't involve slurpy versus milkshake. But let us say, this is one real busy playing game.
What we mean by busy is that you never have a minutes rest. The enemy, which in this case are aliens and their giant insect pets, attack you relentlessly and in great numbers. And when you're not fighting insects, you'll be engaging all sorts of flying and walking robots. And how do you fight these monsters? Apparently on foot with a rocket launcher. We kid you not.
But they do give you a range of weapons. There's a really powerful rocket launcher that can wipe out a city block. And then there's some mech vehicle that's hard to control. But most of the time, it's just you and the rocket launcher and a few more soldiers. You'll run around the city blowing up everything. Don't worry about the city getting damaged. Nobody cares in this game. There's no great strategy here. Just run and shoot. The enemy doesn't really concentrate on you that much. They seem to be more interested in destroying the city.
The textures in this game stink. But you'll rarely be looking at the ground because of all the enemy activity. And to keep you away from the awful textures, the developers have added spectacular explosions and colorful lasers. This works for us. This game would have been a better arcade game than a console game.
There's coop and that's it. Like we said, this is more arcade than console. And to top off the annoyance factor, your character has no jet pack which would have added to the gameplay. This is surprisingly considering the Japanese have made these types of game and really, this is the third installment of the series. First on the 360 though. We find this game fun and addictive, maybe because we like huge explosions and destroying cities. But if you want depth or even a smart AI, look elsewhere. This game survives on sheer numbers of enemy and their huge sizes to scare you into believing there's actualy AI.
