It only happens once every 2 weeks when a company decides to release an Xbox or Playstation game on the 360 and call it the Extreme or Ultimate Edition. Usually, stuff like this results in crap. But once in a very long time, a converted game is actually better than the original. Flatout Ultimate is one of those games.
What makes it so much better? The answer is more mayhem. Once you get passed the obvious difference in graphics quality of the cars and track, what you'll discover is that Ultimate just has way more stuff happening at once. More mayhem and carnage means more fun. And that's really what Flatout has always been about. It's not a game for those that want to get the best time on the track. It's a game for those that want to see the driver launched out their car's front window and into a another car's window.
The amount of detail and destruction is so much more than Flatout 2 thanks to the power of the 360. You'll be smiling from side to side as you watch all the crashes you cause every second. It's like watching Nascar and seeing nothing but crashes instead of the actual race. And yes, there's plenty of side games that have you trying to hurl your driver to knock down bowling pins or whatever. The game progresses in the standard events racing where when one event unlocks another event and more vehicles. There's also a stunt mode where you have to do stunts.
The cars and track look good. It's not Project Gotham or anything, but it's still nextgen. The special effects are the best part of the graphics, especially the fire and smoke. They spent more time on the special effects to bump them to 360 standards. Music and sound are acceptable, but nothing special. You'd probably end up replacing it with your own soundtrack like you would in most other racers.
There's a decent number of online modes and events. This game really shines online thanks to the amount of mayhem and objects on the track. Flatout Ultimate may just be Flatout 2, but it's definitely worth a buy if you're tired of all the standard racers available and want something exciting and chaotic on your 360.
