X-men is based on the movie, which is based on the Marvel comic. It even narrates like a movie comic. For those of you who have mutant powers that involve reading, you might be able to make some sense of what's on the screen in these comic book narratives because they just fly by. Like here, Nightcrawler drew some attention to himself. O-really? I'd scream too if I was on guard duty and saw that face pop out of nowhere.
You start off as Wolverine fighting Sabretooth. After weak punch, strong punch, block, you can "unleash" your mutant power. Then weak punch, strong punch, and block again. Get use to this. You'll be doing it ALOT. Sabretooth leaves after awhile and you're introduced to your first grunt soldier that would make Captain K irk proud. These guys die quick and don't leave a mess for McCoy.
Painfully, you're introduced to a whopping 2 other mutants with special powers. Here, Iceman slides around on ice. He can also shoot ice. Amazingly enough, someone sets fire to some buildings and he has to put out these fires with ice!
We wished we could play Iceman the entire game and just freeze all the enemies. But we can't. Only Nightcrawler can be used on some levels and only Iceman can put out fires. Where's Colossus or Storm? Not playable, I can tell you that.
So you're thinking, this game must have some good qualities? It does. It's only 6 hours long, and you'll spend most of those hours pressing one button. But let's go on about the graphics. They're okay and shiny in some places. Just like every other multi-console 360 game. And the music? If you like musical movie scores or brought the soundtrack to the movie, you can spend 6 hours listening to this. Six minutes was five minutes too much for me. The controls are at least adequate. Although all you do is block and weak punch. There are combos, but mostly block and weak punch is enough.
The feeling among us is that this game was rushed to sell before the movie was released. We're not Sherlock Holmes, or even the hot babe on Cold Case, but this sure feels like a rushed job. Everything from NOT showing the movie cutscenes to only three main characters feels like it was made for quick cash. This is kinda surprising from Activision which did a pretty good job with the Spiderman releases. The only decent thing about this game are the boss fights. But even then, it's kinda like quick punch, run, quick punch, run. But that's just our cheat style of gameplay.
This game is a rental at best. The action is quick and light, but so is everything else about this game. There's just way better games in this genre elsewhere, even from the same company, if not on the same platform (hint, think Xbox).
